Magee the surprise in Demo radio show
During Thursday’s talk back session on Radio Cook Islands by the Democratic Party, the question was posed as to who people wanted as Speaker of the House and the preferences were surprising.
Figures kept by Radio Show Host, Captain “G” showed 20 people attracting votes. Tupapa identity and self employed Builder/community worker George Magee was just ahead with 22, of well known academic John Herman with 20. Next was the incumbent Speaker Hon Norman George with 18. The rest were well behind. Two persons who would make ideal Speakers scored lowly. Iaveta Short received 3 votes and Pae Puna 2 votes (See list).
Speaking to the Times after the Radio session, George Magee said he was surprised at the number of votes he attracted. He thinks people chose him because of his background. He has been a highly vocal advocate for stamping out corruption at the highest levels in government and politics. So much so, he has previously incurred the wrath of politicians like Hon Norman George.
Magee said he knows how to speak plainly, in a way ordinary people can understand and can solve problems. Magee said he has seen too much “dirt. ”He’s been on a crusade to clean up politics. A vastly reformed individual from the days when he was on the wrong side of the law, Magee said “If Saul can do it, I can do it.” In a clear reference to Saul of the Bible who became Paul, Magee seeks to achieve change in an “honest” way, no preferences, no bias, a modern day “Paul.” He points to his helping many people on Rarotonga through his involvement in building and construction.
