USP art workshop a success
An exhibition was held at the USP in Takamoa on Thursday evening to showcase the art work produced by those who attended the recent art workshop. The one week workshop was held at the USP and organized by Ian George. Fifteen people attended the workshop ranging from existing artists to a fifteen year old student.
The purpose of the workshop was to teach the artists how to prepare a portfolio of their work. Tutors at the workshop were New Zealand based artist Cook Islander David Teata and local painter/carver Varu Samuel. Guest speakers at the workshop were well known Pacific artist Mahiriki Tangaroa and emerging Pacific artist Faimau Robati.
Teata who produces block prints said that he loved the workshop and found the experience a challenge. Teata taught the students how to make block prints and shared his skills and knowledge in the art of print. For Teata it was also a learning experience as the techniques used to produce the final product was different due to the lack of resource material and printing equipment here in Rarotonga.
Samuel also enjoyed the experience of teaching the class. He said that he found it encouraging sharing his technique and skills in drawing and painting with the class. The modest artist said that it was a pleasure to be working with the students and that he would not hesitate to take part in future workshops.
