Area’s not for huts: Minister

A local man said he is unhappy his long held plans for a hut at the market have been turned down after he gained initial approval from the Secretary for Agriculture. The man did not wish to be named.
The new hut was to be constructed in the vacant area next to the Manager’s office, where currently fresh fish is sold.
Wooden boxing had been laid on the ground last Saturday. But he has now had to remove this following a meeting on Monday afternoon between himself, the Secretary for Agriculture and Minister for Internal Affairs Ngamau Munokoa.
The man said he had received a letter from the Secretary of Agriculture cancelling his permit to put up a hut.
The Minister informed the Times on Friday that the person concerned had been trying to secure the area concerned since 2001. She had made it known back then that there was to be no building erected at this spot and the person was offered three alternatives.
These three alternatives are still available today, according to the Minister.
She confirmed she met with the man and her Secretary for Agriculture on Monday.
The man told the Times the alternative sites he had been offered were around the back on the riverside. He said these were unsuitable as he preferred the site on the main road and that he was to sell food.

APPROVAL

The Secretary for Agriculture had given his approval to the man without realising his Minister’s intentions regarding this space.
The Minister said when she saw the wooden boxing laid out last Saturday and the person concerned at the site, she contacted the Secretary for Agriculture on the Monday morning to ask what was going on. The Minister said the man was going to sell tinned foodstuffs.
