How to dial up those new rates
How do the new Telecom Cook Islands international toll call rates work?
Some people have been uncertain about how they are charged, despite the widespread advertising campaign.
So Keren Aviu, of Telecom Cook Islands, has provided the following explanation for the benefit of our readers:
“International Toll Calls to New Zealand for up to 1 hour will cost no more than $5.
International Toll Calls to the USA, Fiji, Australia, Canada and the UK for up to 1 hour will cost no more than $10.
“These new international toll capped rates (not ‘specials’) became effective from 11th September, 2006 and are applicable all day, everyday.
“These new international toll capped rates apply to calls from landlines with International Direct Dial (or IDD) service from anywhere in the Cook Islands. They are not available from Mobile phones, Kia Orana Cards or Operator Services.
“With the international capped calls, customers pay whatever the normal rate per minute is for the call up until the cost of the call reaches the specified “Cap”.  $5 if you are calling New Zealand or $10 if you are calling Fiji, Australia, UK, USA or Canada.
“Once the cost of your call reaches the capped rate ($5 or $10 depending on the country you are calling), there are no additional charges for the call unless the call exceeds the specified time limit of one hour.
“If your call goes over the time limit of one hour, then you pay the capped rate ($5 or $10) plus the excess time that will be charged at normal rates.  There is no limit on the number of calls you can make in a day.
New Zealand and Australia have day and night rates while Fiji, Australia, Canada, USA and the UK have just the one rate.  The day rate applies to calls from 7am to 10pm daily and the night rate applies from 10pm to 7am daily.”
