Our genealogy through Rangi Makeakea
DEAR EDITOR - In reply to Dorothy Ngaata’s letter (Cook Islands Times, 18 September 2006), I would like to ask her as to how did she interpret reading my letter dated the 26th August in the Cook Islands News.
It would seem that she is assuming that we want to claim our genealogy through her tupuna Te Patuaokino and his families. If you have read my letter properly you will find that we are not claiming our genealogy through him but from our Ancestor Rangi Makeakea and then through his son Putua Ariki by blood right who was killed for the title.
You are saying that there is no such person called Rangi Makea but here is a bit of data dating back to BEFORE Tangiia and Karika.
GENEALOGY OF ARERA UKARAU KATU I TE RANGI
Arera Ukarau was the Ariki at Araitetonga before TANGIIA & KARIKA arrived at Rarotonga round about the 1200AD. He was related to Tangiia and that was why the reason that there was no fight when Tangiia and Karika arrived.
We have traced our genealogy down to Arera Ukarau. Makea Teariki I Te Au became the Makea Ariki after Puta Ki Te Tai. He is the son of Teiva Toa Teponikiniki who was the first born son of Arera Ukarau Katu I Te Rangi and then down to Makea Rangi Makeakea. So where do you think Rangi Makea Vakatini got his title from?
Of course Te Patuaokino who is not related by blood but by marriage was brought up by Makea Rangi Tu Ki Vao and after his death Rangi Makeakea looked after Te Patuaokino.Te Patuaokino had three wives, who each had three first born sons and from each of these sons he gave them one title each which is the Makea, Vakatini and the Karika titles. Getting the picture now??
Nothing to do with our genealogy but we have to admit that the families have now married into our families so we welcome then too.
Refer below for part of the court case when Willie Browne won the Tereora Land.
It is unfortunate that Makea has questioned Willie Browne’s descent from Putua Ariki because her conductor admitted it in 1949 (A.M.B. 1/225) and Makea herself (p.278 ante) says that Mautaua was the only Ngati Putua to escape. Nor has the Court been able to find that any objection was raised to Willie Browne’s genealogy given in the Makea Nui case in 1939 (M.B. 12/289-290).Willie Browne is holding the Rangatira title of Putua today.
On the evidence given at this hearing and upon reading the evidence given in 1905 and in 1912 and that given before the Native Appellate Court (A.M.B. 1/218-228)the Court finds that the following facts have been proved by evidence or accepted by the parties.
1. Willie Browne is a descendant of Putua Ariki.
To tell you all the truth up to 2001, I wouldn’t have thought that I would be doing this but after being touched by our Almighty God and Lord Jesus Christ and through the Holy Spirit I was guided to do the job that was needed to have the truth revealed and if God is involved the truth will always prevail.
So to Dorothy, I really do feel that your information in your letter is incorrect as I do not really know what you are going on about. I have my proof to substantiate them and if you want to know more then come to our meeting at the MANIHIKI HALL on the 14th October at 1pm. Please note the change of venue.
There will be a letter in the Cook Islands News soon regarding Willie Browne’s genealogy that refers to the above and I do hope that you will understand why the family is now claiming for this title. May our God and Lord Jesus Christ bless everyone reading this letter as we do need the faith in them to protect us from evil.
