Tough routine for Oceania hopefuls

Six evenings a week, the national boxing coach, Tevita Vakalalabure, puts the Oceania boxing squad through its paces at the Arorangi Boxing Club.
Five boxers make up the squad which trains from 5.30pm to 7pm at the Arorangi club, behind the Ministry of Works building.
From these boxers, a team of four will be selected to represent the Cook Islands at the Oceania championships in Samoa starting 23 April.
The training squad is: Oke Opeta, Vengi Hagai, Ray Roumano, Marcus Jack and Rima George.
All are in a three-week camp at the Cook Islands Football Association complex at Matavera.
Their day begins at 4.30am with an intense 20-minute workout at the Matavera complex after which there’s breakfast and each member attends to their normal day job.
After training during the evening at Arorangi, it’s back to the complex for dinner and bed by 9pm. Next week, coach Vakalalabure intends to up the intensity at training.
INVITATION
The Cook Islands Amateur Boxing Association (CIABA) extends an invitation to all supporters and especially former boxers to come to the Arorangi club to give these young men encouragement and support.
They would also appreciate people visiting the Matavera complex after training (after 7pm) to give support and also help with donations of food.
The squad being sent to the Oceania champs will be largely inexperienced so advice from former boxers who have represented the Cook Islands is considered invaluable. The intention is to develop these Oceania squad boxers for the future.
The next boxing contest will be held at the Banana Court on 17 April.
