Peace Island
Police praise behaviour
By Shona Pitt
Police in Aitutaki were happy with the behaviour of people during the recent holiday period.
There was a big crowd on the island due to an estimated 800 extra visitors.
Three policemen were on duty in Aitutaki, two constables and one sergeant.
They carried out a similar campaign to the one run by the Police in Rarotonga.
Constable Alfred Masters said they held a traffic blitz, inspected liquor licences, patrolled after-hours parties and checked clubs and bars for underage drinkers.
VISITORS
Masters said that they found a lot of underage drinkers on licensed premises. He said that the majority were overseas visitors who were with family members.
He said two motor vehicle accidents were reported, one with serious injuries, which was alcohol related.
Masters said no domestic violence cases were reported and they were not aware or any fights between spouses.
Complaints to do with domestic situations were mainly land disputes, he said. These were generally settled with the assistance of family members.
SUPPORT
Masters acknowledged the Aitutaki Punanga Tauturu organisation, which they have been working closely with. He said that they are extremely grateful for their assistance and support and that it made a big difference working together.
Masters pointed out that another contributing factor to the quietness was the restricted liquor licensing hours. With bars closing at midnight, Masters said it made a big difference.
He also said that they are recommending that they continue with the restricted operating hours of licensed premises.
