Pleased at his posting

Acting New Zealand High Commissioner, Tia Barrett is enjoying his temp assignment to the Cook Islands after Brian Donnelly resigned for health reasons. He said he is pleased to bring the rain with him because his understanding is that we had rather dry weather up until he arrived.
He has visited Cook Islands twice before his posting and just quietly hopes that this will not be his last. Barrett has been a career diplomat since the 1970s when he joined the NZ Foreign Ministry after gaining his degree in English, French and History and is the Director of the Maori Policy unit at the Ministry.
As an accomplished linguist, Barrett’s first overseas post was in New Caledonia in 1971 as Vice Consul; then as First Secretary in Paris where he was involved in the information and publications division involved in public relations and also defence issues and this was followed by a posting to Tonga.
In 1992, Barrett was posted to the Honiara and New Zealand was active in the development of the Solomon Islands in the time before the country experienced turmoil in the late 90s. Next assignment was Fiji from 1998 to 2001, which turned out to be very interesting times because it coincided with the time of the George Speight led coup in Fiji. Safety and security were the main issues not only for the diplomatic corps but also for the Fijian people themselves.
Barrett is proud of his Maori heritage and is a member of the Tainui tribe and comes from Ngati Maniapoto and the Waikato clans. He was a member of the Maori King’s delegation to Raiatea in 2007 where they met our PM, Jim Marurai, Ada Rongomatane Ariki and Te Tika Mataiapo amongst other dignitaries there.
When Barrett first began his career in the Diplomatic Corps there were very few Maori but he is proud of those who rose to the top of the field in the past.
They include Sir Charles Bennett (Malaya), Sir John Grace (to Fiji), Brian Poananga (PNG), Deborah Packhurst, John Mataira (Consul General in LA) and Robert Kaiwai (Kiribati).
Barrett says competition to become the Cook Islands High Commissioner’s post will be fierce but the process takes quite some time so the results will not be known for at least two months. Kia manuia to Tia Barrett.
