Mitiaro tackles plastic bag menace

Thanks to a joint initiative between Westpac Bank and the National Environment Service (NES) the island of Mitiaro is to get a supply of 200 recyclable cloth bags in a move to reduce the number of plastic bags on the island. It was following a review by NES that Mitiaro backed a campaign to reduce and rid the island of plastic bags which had become a problem. According to Deyna Marsh of NES the NES approached Westpac Bank for their support. The bank made the presentation of the bags to NES Director Vaitoti Tupa at a special ceremony on Friday morning. Marsh says NES hopes the other outer islands will join this initiative. - Charles Pitt
