Ioane loses Environment, gains Internal Affairs, Agriculture
Prime Minister Hon Jim Marurai has reshuffled more Cabinet Portfolios. The PM made the announcement public on Thursday afternoon after the new warrants were issued.
Hon Kete Ioane takes over the Internal Affairs Portfolio from Hon Ngamau Munokoa who in return assumes responsibility for Environment from Ioane. The PM advised the Ioane of this on Tuesday following Cabinet.
The Times understands on Wednesday day the PM also confirmed with Munokoa the transfer of Agriculture from Munokoa to Ioane after Ioane requested on Tuesday that the PM transfer Agriculture.
The Times has learnt that the PM’s decision follows a consultation with a number of colleagues.
Although no longer Minister for Environment, Cabinet has approved Ioane leading a seven member delegation to an Environment Conference in Poland in December 2008 being a Conference of the Parties (COP).
Prior to being relieved of the Environment portfolio, Ioane was an effective advocate for the Cook Islands and other small island states on the international stage. His short but dramatic speech at the Bali Conference early in his term drew world attention to the plight of the Cook Islands and other Pacific island states. It put our country on the world map. He was interviewed by international TV and his speech received publicity in the London Times, The Australian, The NZ Herald, The Jakarta Post and the Scotsman.
The Scottish Parliament was so impressed with Ioane they invited him to Scotland (fully funded) to open a Climate Change Project
A consolation will be that Ioane along with other Ministers will receive a briefing from the American delegation on American President elect Barack Obama’s views on climate change. With Obama’s background growing up on Hawaii he would have empathy with the views of the Cook Islands delegation.
Ioane’s office told the Times on Friday he is looking forward to progressing issues affecting agriculture. Especially the outstanding FAO funds for projects like the relocation of the Research Station to Mauke. Ioane wants to get things “moving” and he is comfortable with a portfolio with enormous development potential.
